Active Footpaths Project
The Mansfield Active Foothpaths Project is aimed at increasing incidental and affordable physical activity within the community. The project involves strategic adhesive stickers and signage across the shire that prompt community members to complete a range of physical activities...
So how did this project start?
The idea for this project was born in the peak of COVID-19 restrictions.
When there were no gyms/studios open, no organized sport was running and the playgrounds were closed. There were very little options for parents to keep their kids active.
However, an art teacher from one of the local primary schools had an idea to draw prompts on the footpath out the front of her own house that encouraged passers by to pause and complete a certain exercise or activity, and she was pleasantly surprised by how many people actually stopped to complete them. This lady had heard about the work we were doing and brought the idea to our Physical Activity working group and asked if it could be taken further.
A sub-committee was formed, we applied for a grant from Vic Health which we were lucky enough to receive, and we got to work.
We had a local PT advising on exercises and a local graphic designer design the stickers. The PT’s daughter was filmed demonstrating each exercise and a video from our website was linked to each sticker via a QR code so that users can complete the exercises safely.
You can find the stickers dotted around our township to this day.
